For two days, food and festivities are prepared to honor and remember friends and family who have passed. In many homes, an ofrenda (alter) is made, decorated with candles, flowers, wildflowers, fruit, plates of mole, tortillas and toys. Folk art skeletons and decorated skulls adorn everything. It is believed that the gates of heaven open on Oct 31 and the spirits of beloved deceased are allowed to reunite with their family for two days. The Day of the Dead's folklore has been an inspirational source for art, some of its symbols blended with those of Halloween, occurring on the same date.
